National Patient Safety Day

The British Hospital intensively works on the Patient´s Safety as a sublimated concept of the quality of care. The patient´s safety and the actions aimed at preventing, intercepting and mitigating adverse events that occur during care attention are an important target of the WHO and PAHO that our country wishes to prioritize. Since 2005 the Hospital has put into practice an intense Training Program, which has allowed us the academic training of various professionals in the field of Security. Since 2012, the Hospital has developed specific safety policies of the hospitalized patient in accordance with the 6 International Patient´s Safety Goals propelled by the World Health Organization. In 2013, these policies were put into practice by the Hospital Pediatrics´ services (Pediatrics Hospitalization, Neonatal Unit, Emergency and Surgical Block). A year later they began to develop in Maternity, and nowadays they are implemented in a transversal way, contemplating adult admission services. Each of these policies defines follow-up indicators which allow a close understanding of reality through the analysis and periodic evaluation of our care actions, identifying opportunities for improvement in the health team and emerging scenarios. Patient identification: In the British Hospital the assignment and the use of identification wristbands are mandatory at the time of admission to the institution. The identification of the patient is the procedure that allows to provide the patient the necessary elements for the patient´s movement, from the admission moment to the discharge from the Hospital, as a unique and unmistakable person and to prevent mistakes in the administration of treatments or procedures. Hand hygiene: Hand hygiene is the primary measure to reduce infections. The British Hospital is a conscious organization about the importance of the proper hand hygiene. In this context, efforts are focused on awareness actions for the effective fulfillment of the technique and the five moments for hand hygiene endorsed by the WHO. Effective communication: We acculturate behaviors and improve results with the incorporation of the 5 Minutes Security program during the shift changes (usual informative meetings of the assistance teams). Safe medication: The Hospital works on the correct classification, identification and accessibility of high-risk medication. Culturally, we encourage a rigorous check-up every step of your preparation. Prevention of falls: In the Hospital preventive policies are implemented based on the assessment of the risk of falls of each patient. Increasing the knowledge of family members or caregivers of our patients it is understood as a fundamental action of the health team to reduce the risk of falls. Safe Surgery: In relation to Safe Surgery the Hospital has established a Mark Policy of the Side or Level in order to guarantee the correct surgical site through the marking of all patients who will be receiving surgical procedures involving laterality, level or multiple structures. Following the recommendations of the WHO and as a complementary way to this policy, the Hospital in all cases applies the surgical checklist for the safety of the surgery, usually called Checklist, before and after the procedure, recording and documenting all the actions of the Assurance made. Currently the British Hospital is focused on the implementation of new strategies that allow maximization of controls to the detriment of the risk factors on hospital care.
